Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the electrical questions we hear most around the Peace Country.

Safety first

Something’s wrong right now?

My breaker keeps tripping. What does that mean?
A breaker trips to protect you. If it trips once, you’ve likely overloaded the circuit, so unplug something and reset it. If it trips again right away or keeps tripping, stop resetting it: that usually points to a short or a fault. Leave it off and call us.
I smell burning or see scorch marks near an outlet or panel.
Treat this as urgent. If you can do it safely, switch off the breaker for that area, stop using the outlet, and call us right away. A burning smell or browning around an outlet means something is overheating.
My lights flicker or dim. Is that a problem?
One flickering bulb is usually just loose, so tighten or replace it. But if lights across the house flicker, dim when big appliances kick on, or it’s getting worse, that can point to a loose connection or an overloaded, aging panel. Worth having checked.
Some outlets stopped working but no breaker tripped.
Look for a GFCI outlet, the kind with TEST and RESET buttons, common in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoors, and press RESET. One GFCI often controls several outlets at once. If that doesn’t bring them back, give us a call.
Should I keep flipping a breaker that won’t stay on?
No. If a breaker won’t reset or trips the instant you flip it, that’s a sign of a fault, and forcing it can be a fire risk. Leave it off and book a service call.

When to call us

Do I need an electrician for that?

Do I need an electrician to add or move an outlet?
Yes. Adding or relocating a receptacle means new wiring inside your walls that has to meet the Canadian Electrical Code. It’s a quick job for us, and it keeps your home safe and properly insured.
Do I need an electrician to install a light fixture or ceiling fan?
Swapping a fixture for a similar one where the wiring already exists can be a simple job. But adding a fixture where there wasn’t one, adding a switch, or hanging a ceiling fan (they’re heavy and need a fan-rated box) is work for an electrician.
Do I need an electrician for an EV charger?
Yes. A Level 2 charger needs its own 240-volt circuit, correctly sized wire, and a quick check that your panel has enough capacity. We size it properly so your vehicle charges fast and safely.
Do I need an electrician to upgrade my panel or service?
Always. Panel and service upgrades, like going from 100 to 200 amp, tie into the utility and are licensed, permitted, inspected work. This is never a DIY project.
Do I need an electrician for a shop, shed, hot tub, or acreage subpanel?
Yes. These need a dedicated circuit, the right breaker and wire size, GFCI protection, and a permit. Shops, barns, and acreage hook-ups are some of the most common jobs we do across the Peace Country.
